Concern over favouritism in sports
Mandi Ahmedgarh / 22-02-04
A seminar on “Position of Indian sports at international level” was organised at Govind National College, Narangwal, yesterday. According to Dr. Hardiljit Singh Gosal, Principal of the college, in this seminar experts shared their views on this subject.
During his keynote address, Dr Joginder Singh Aulakh, Arjuna awardee, and former Vice-Chancellor, Lakhshami Bai National Sports University, expressed concern over alleged increase in trend of favouritism during selection of sportspersons for international events. He alleged that performance was being ignored both at the time of selection of teams and conferring of awards and titles. He said, “Earlier, only gold medal winners at international events used to get Arjuna Award. Travelling through silver and bronze medal winners, they have now bowed down to recognise even those players who do not qualify for international competitions.”

Emphasising the need for educating sportsperson, he argued that most of the successful sportspersons working as employees failed to reach top positions in their departments due to lack of adequate academic qualifications. He called upon students to shun the use of drugs and intoxicants and maintained that only sound physical and mental health could pave the way for success.

Dr. Karamjit Brar from Gurusar College, Sudhar, and Dr Jasbir Kaur from Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana, emphasised the role of discipline and time management. Dr. Hardiljit Singh Gosal, Principal of the college, gave a vote of thanks.
