CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday dismissed the petition challenging the 2012 election of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bibi Jagir Kaur from Bholath assembly seat.

Petitioner Kulbeer Singh had challenged her election on the grounds that she used corrupt means to win the election and her nomination during her term as chairman of a board was illegal.

The bench of justice Jaswant Singh dismissed the petition, since in three hearings (November 14, December 12, and Wednesday), nobody had appeared on behalf of the petitioner. “It appears the petitioner is not interested in pursuing his election petition,” the bench said in its order, dismissing the petition in “default”.

Meanwhile, the high court bench of justice Ajay Tewari framed issues against the election of Anandpur Sahib MP Prem Chand Chandumajra. Petitioner Harbhag Singh had moved court earlier this year after the Akali leader was elected to the Lok Sabha.

The court framed six issues as preliminary and two more as main. The arguments on the preliminary issues will start on January 28. The allegations include using religious symbols in election advertisements on television.
