Patiala : Sikh philanthropist Surinder Pal Singh Oberoi has joined the club of eminent Sikhs who have got ‘Sikh of the year’ award at the House of Lords, London. The Sikh International Forum (TSIF) has given Oberoi this award for the year 2013.

Oberoi was awarded ‘Sikh of Year award” by Indian High Commissioner to U K Ranjan Mathai, Attorney General of UK Dominic Grieve and Lord John Stevens at the function which was largely attended by the Sikhs of Britain recently.

The media office of Sarbat Da Bhala Trust who released the pictures here on Thursday said that Oberoi was known for his philanthropic and charitable activities in India and Dubai. He was in news for the release of 17 Indian Youth from Dubai jail in exchange of blood money to the family of murdered Pakistani youth. Oberoi has set up a Sarbat Da Bhalla Trust to help needy and poor people.

Oberoi (59), born in Nangal in Punjab and trained as an engine mechanic, believed in making his dreams a reality. Confident of his skills, this engine mechanic from Ropar packed his bags to leave for Dubai in late seventies. He came back in early eighties to start a family business in Punjab but went back again to Dubai in 1993 to set up a new venture.

After receiving award Oberoi thanked TSIF and said that “the members of TSIF have expressed their confidence in me and it is my duty to work more for mankind”. Overwhelmed Oberoi said over phone from London that “I believe in the spirit of giving back to society”.

TSIF was established in 1985 with the help of like-minded Sikhs by late Lt General Jagjit Singh Aurora, a true Indian soldier who led the Indian forces to victory against Pakistan in 1971 war, which led to the birth of a new country - Bangladesh.

Its current global president Ranjit Singh is the founder president of the forum. The forum is a charitable organisation and its main aims are: Promote the cultural heritage of Sikhism and spread its message of peace.
