NEW DELHI: Australia is once again coming up as an educational destination for Indians, according to the data on visas granted to Indian students.
There has been an almost 33% increase in the number of student visas granted to Indians in the first nine months of the Australian financial year from July 1, 2013 till the end of March 2014 as compared to the corresponding figures between July 2012 and March 2013.
The increase in the students going to Australia also has an indirect effect on increasing the number of Indians travelling to Australia on tourist visas, Australia’s High Commissioner to India Patrick Suckling said.
The Australian High Commission celebrated a new landmark on Wednesday— for the first time, it had issued more than 100,000 tourism visas to Indians in a single financial year.
Exuding confidence that India-Australia relations will further improve under the new government led by PM Modi, Suckling said: “There are many strategic, security and economic convergences between the two nations. Modi has shown an interest in developing infrastructure and energy in which Australia can play a vital role in working with India.”
