Jalandhar : The NRI Sabha Punjab has sought assistance from international agencies for rescuing Punjabis stuck in the strife torn cities of Iraq for the past some time.

President Jasvir Singh Gill said that the Ministry of External Affairs in the Centre government and the Punjab government was taking initiatives to bring back Punjabis home and NRI Sabha has also sought help from international agencies.

In a press release issued here on Tuesday, Gill said that NRI Sabha Punjab has taken assistance from National Humans Rights Commission, United Nations and International Labour Organization (ILO). “The NRI Sabha has also approached the Indian Embassies at Iraq, Kuwait, Syria and Saudi Arabia so that a exact number of Indians and Punjabis stuck in war affected cities in Iraq could be identified and safely brought home to India,” he said.

Gill also expressed concern over the rising conflict in Iraq, which had started affecting the other Middle East countries in the Gulf. “Reports from the ongoing civil war in Iraq had been suggesting the possibility of deteriorating living conditions in other Gulf nations. The Indian government should not only speed up the rescue work in Iraq but also start working in this directions for timely efforts for other Middle East countries too,” he said.

The NRI Sabha President also raised the vicious and serious issue of going to the Middle East countries through the nexus of illegal travel agents in Punjab. “It was surprising that despite rising war situations in Iraq and other Gulf nations, Punjabis were still trying to reach in these countries in the lure of better money. NRI Sabha Punjab was also running an awareness campaign against illegal travel agents to stop such means of migration,” he added.

Further, he also appealed to the Punjabis going abroad that before moving out to another country, they should get themselves registered with NRI Sabha. “Punjabis should provide the details of visa and ticket, which would be kept confidential by the sabha. Such details would always help Punjabis in the hour of need and crisis situations like the one prevailing in Iraq,” he maintained.
