LONDON: Punjab-origin industrialist Swraj Paul paid tributes to his teachers in Jalandhar where he was born and grew up before leaving India’s shores for higher studies and setting up major industries in the West and elsewhere.
Speaking at an event in London Zoo in memory of his late daughter Ambica, who died in 1968, Paul, 83, fondly remembered his April visit to Jalandhar, where he set up the Ambica Paul School of Technology.
Paul, who donated £1 million to prevent the London Zoo from closure in 1992, said of the Jalandhar visit: “It was a great experience. The people were so welcoming. We visited the city to name the college which we built there as the Ambica Paul School of Technology. I wish it all the best as it is my gift to my place of birth.”
“It also gave me the opportunity to pay my tribute to my elder brothers and sisters who have brought me up and all the teachers who worked very hard and made us work very hard in the bargain. I want to convey my thanks to the people of Jalandhar for all the love and affection,” he added.
The event was attended by leading politicians and other VIPs, including the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Baroness Ashton and Sarah Brown, wife of former prime minister Gordon Brown.
