Kapurthala: An NRI bridegroom has been booked for torturing his wife mentally as well as physically to seek more dowry.

The complainant Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Kapurthala in her written complaint told the police that accused Sukhharpreet Singh came into contact with her through Facebook and afterwards he along with his family started to visit her house. She also stated that during frequent visits of his family, his parents asked her parents to wedlock her with Sukhharpreet Singh and her parents accepted it.

Her marriage was solemnised with Sukhharpreet on February 18 at Khera Resorts and her parents spent beyond their status to solemnise her marriage besides giving 200 grams of gold to her in-laws.

She added that her husband Sukhharpreet Singh who moved to Australia called her to Australia on a visitor visa during the month of April last year.

She stated that during her visit to Australia he raised his demand for payment of Rs 10 lakh for purchase of a car, and after expiry of her visitor visa she returned back to her home on July 12 last year.

But the attitude of her in-laws changed towards her and her mother in-law also pressurized her to bring cash, she alleged. On the basis of her statement, an enquiry was made by in-charge women’s cell, Sultanpur Lodhi, who found that all the allegations were correct as levied against Sukhharpreet Singh and on her recommendation SSP, Kapurthala ordered to register a case against said accused under Section 406 and 498-A of IPC.
