Sangrur : British Deputy High Commissioner David Lelliott met Aam Aadmi Party MP from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann today. They held discussion on problems being faced by Punjabi students in England, Punjabis living in England illegally and the drug-menace.

Bhagwant Mann said Lelliott visited Patiala today to see the polling process during the Assembly byelection there. Lelliott had also visited the Sangrur parliamentary constituency during the Lok Sabha election campaign.

Mann said he told Lelliott that there were a large number of Punjabi students in England with whom agents had committed fraud on the pretext of securing their admission in colleges there. The agents duped students of lakhs of rupees as the colleges in which the students had been provided admission were not recognised, he said.

Lelliott said the students should not go to unauthorised agents. They should seek emigration to England directly through their offices situated at Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Mann said Lelliott assured that the British Council would organise training sessions for students wanting to go England for study. Such a training session would also be organised at Sangrur, he said.

Mann said he also raised the issue of Punjabis living in England illegally. He said he told Lelliott that he had been receiving phone calls from such persons who wanted to return to India but had no safe way to do so. Lelliott asked Mann to upload phone numbers of such persons on Facebook and they would help them.
