Amritsar : A five-member delegation under the supervision of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar met with the New Zealand High Commission and appealed to them to take legal action against the accused who was responsible for the killing of a Sikh in New Zealand.

The delegation also handed over a memorandum to the New Zealand High Commission. Makkar said that the incident took place at Poppo Toto city in New Zealand when a Sikh Davinder Singh went to the market bazaar to pick up his wife after work, when some miscreants allegedly attacked him and killed him.

Makkar said that he apprised the Commission about the enhancing incidents of racial discrimination against the Sikh community and that there was a need to secure the minority Sikhs in foreign countries. He said that the High Commission told them that the attack on the Sikh was not a racial attack, it was just a family dispute. Makkar said that according to the High Commission, the New Zealand police has arrested the accused and would be punished according to the law.

Makkar also given the invitation to the New Zealand High Commissioner to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple.

The SGPC president said that the recent attacks on the Sikhs in foreign countries like USA and Canada were unfortunate. He said that the Sikh community were pretty sure that this was a hate crime because there was so much ignorance and people mistook them either being Taliban or being part of Bin Laden’s network because of their turbans and beards.

He said that he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the matter and ask him to secure the safety of Sikh community in foreign countries such as USA and New Zealand. He said that Sikhs were a part of minority and it was the responsibility of India and foreign countries to secure the minority class.

Makkar said that several lakh Sikhs were residing there and playing an important role in the development of these countries and being citizens of the country, the government should prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

He added that male Sikhs grow thick beards and cover their heads with turbans and they were often misunderstood, labelled terrorists or mistaken for Muslims, so it was a need of the hour to spread awareness the foreigners about the Sikh identity and it was only possible with the efforts of the concerned countries.
