Jalandhar : The NRI Sabha Punjab on Friday sought the intervention of Centre government in the release of over 40 people, who were stuck in war-affected Iraq and wanted to return back home to India.

NRI Sabha President Jasvir Singh Gill said that the Centre government should come to the aid of Punjabis, who had been able to contact their families back home and wanted to escape the war zone. “We have got a list of 40 youth stuck in Iraq, who were trapped in Iraq and wanted to come back. Their parents approached NRI Sabha, after they received phone calls from their sons. The Centre government should immediately take a stand for their safe exit”, he said.

Gill further highlighted that even the youth who had returned home from Iraq were also running from pillar to post to receive financial assistance from the Punjab government. A group of 38 youth had gathered at the sabha office on Friday, where they narrated their tale of woes.

Rajidner Pal, a resident of Nauli village in Jalandhar who returned from Basrah said that the Punjab government failed in providing rehabilitation. “I left 3,500 US dollar salary in Basrah before coming to Punjab. I don’t know, if the government has any plans for rehabilitating us but we had been left in the lurch,” he said.

Another youth Mandeep, a resident of Madhopur near Bhogpur said that Punjab government had promised Rs 40,000 assistance, but not even a single penny was given. He said that it has been three months since he came back from Iraq, but there had been no assistance from the state government.

Satwinder Kumar from Bachoi village in Hoshiarpur also came back home two months ago and had been living without any financial assistance and job in hand. “We faced the worst times, as we had to forsake US dollar 400 as salary in Karbala in Iraq while in Punjab, we had been left running here and there,” he said.

They also maintained that there were around 400 Punjabis who were still stuck in Iraq and wanted to return home. “We had been informing them that there was no scope in Punjab, as the government had not been supporting. Jobs were never available in Punjab and now we were facing troubles in making both ends meet,” they added.

Jalandhar: Earlier, Gill released a calendar of NRI Sabha which was based on career guidance for the government school students after Class X. He said that the calenders would be released in Jalandhar and Kapurthala in around 2,500 government schools.
