Arrest of Indians after brawl: Centre takes up case with Kuwait

NEW DELHI: India has taken up with Kuwait the arrest of around 25 of its nationals there after a brawl with people of another country.

As per reports, the Indian workers were arrested for allegedly murdering two Egyptians.

Indian embassy officials have also visited the hospital where about 15 Indians were admitted after the incident, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, adding that no Indian was in a critical state.

Noting that there is a 7.5 lakhstrong community of Indians in Kuwait which is well-respected, the spokesperson said the incident related to a very small segment of that community.

There was a brawl with other nationals that led to a situation where some Indians got arrested and the ministry had immediately taken action and written to the Kuwait foreign ministry, the spokesperson said. However, he said it was imperative for Indians to abide by local laws.

A total of 14 Indians are now in custody, of which six are in hospital.
