LUDHIANA: After a brawl over the construction of a building at Kohinoor Park on Ferozepur Road here, Peter Sandhu, legislator from the western Canadian province of Alberta, has demanded the arrest of all involved, including the owner, who he alleges bashed up his servant.

He has threatened to boycott the sangat darshan programme for the NRIs ( non- resident Indians) in Ludhiana and Jalandhar this month over the issue. The ruckus broke out after the owner allegedly fought with the Canadian leader, accusing him of bringing some local leaders and policemen over to stop the construction of his house.

The Canadian leader said the owner, Charanpal Singh Aulakh, was building a payingguest accommodation in the residential area, which the residents didn’t want. “When the residents objected, Aulakh’s employee Anil thrashed my servant, Gollu. Besides, Aulakh, his father-in-law, Tarlochan Singh, and friend Frankie threatened us in full public view,” said Sandhu, adding: “On one hand, the government invites the NRIs to invest in the state, and on the other hand, some people create security problems for them.”

On Friday, 25 residents of the area, including the local councillor, decided in a meeting to not allow the construction. “I have told the police commissioner about the issue, and if he doesn’t act, I will boycott the NRI sangat darshan,” said the Canadian legislator.

Aulakh said the Alberta leader, who was also a neighbour here, wanted to purchase his land and, after the offer was declined, had tried to use his influence to put pressure on him. Charanpal said he wasn’t doing the construction for any commercial activity, including the PG business.
