Patiala : With infighting within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) out in the open and drying party coffers haunting it, a delegation will visit Canada to woo NRIs and seek funds for the party.
In fact most political parties are sending delegations abroad to garner support for the 2017 Assembly elections.
Akali leaders recently visited Canada and the US, although they faced stiff opposition from local groups there. A Congress delegation led by former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is expected to visit Canada, US and Europe along with some Congress MLAs’ from Punjab in September.
However, growing rift within the AAP state unit is likely to affect pastry’s image. At least two MPs have said they were “neither contacted nor taken into confidence for any such visit and thus the proposed visit will hardly serve any purpose and will only profit those visiting”.
Patiala MP, Dr Dharamvira Gandhi said: “I have no intimation about our leaders’ visit. It would have been better had they consulted the elected representatives from Punjab before seeking support from Punjab diaspora. The popularity of AAP is huge which is realised during my recent personal visit to the US.”
Fatehgarh Sahib MP Harinder Singh Khalsa alleged the visit by AAP delegation to Canada would serve personal purpose of the visiting leaders but not that of the party. “The party is taking decisions from Delhi without consulting the elected representatives,” he said.
AAP’s state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur said he had applied for Canadian visa and would leave soon. On taking MPs along, he said recently all four Punjab MPs had gone abroad and therefore they were not going again
