LONDON: A Birmingham-based Indian citizen, who worked as a fruit picker before he was seriously injured in a crash between two buses in March 2012, has been awarded more than £2 million as compensation.

The 32-year-old man, who has remained unnamed because of his acute vulnerability, suffered serious brain damage and multiple broken bones. He is now set to return to India.

Jasminder Singh Dhesi, the driver of the coach in which the man was travelling, was jailed for six years in 2013.

Two passengers in Dhesi’s bus died during the head-on collision on the M5 motorway, reports from Birmingham said.

The Indian citizen’s barrister, Paul Bleasdale, said it had not been a “straightforward case”. He said his client was “disappointed with the result of the negotiations” and “does not believe the compensation package is sufficient”.

The man told the high court in London he felt he had been “unfairly and unjustly treated”, the Birmingham Mail reported.

The judge said: “He is not the man who arrived in the UK and, as a result of the terrible injuries he has sustained, he will face a life in India which will be much less satisfactory.”
