SAD leader, four others booked for firing incident

BATHINDA: The police have booked a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, who was defeated in Bathinda municipal corporation (MCB) polls, and four others for allegedly opening fire on a Congress councillor in ward number 19 in the city when the councillor and his supporters were taking out a victory procession on Tuesday.

On a complaint by Congress councillor Beant Singh Randhawa, the police have registered a case under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms act against SAD leader Rajinder Singh Mann alias Raju Mann, his brother Balwinder Singh, Manjit Singh Goyal, Jagdish Mittal and 20 unidentified people.

Mann had allegedly opened fire on Randhawa and his supporters in North Estate locality under the ward when Randhawa was celebrating his victory in the recently-held MC polls. Randhawa had defeated Mann by a narrow margin of 43 votes.

Station house officer (SHO), Civil Lines police station, Karamjit Singh, said that the police have registered a case against the accused under section 336 of the IPC for opening fire in the air which endangers life of others and other sections as in the inquiry till now it has emerged that he had opened fire in the air.

“The police have also received a complaint from Mann against Randhawa and others and the police were inquiring into that also,” he said. No one has yet been arrested so far.
