Bathinda : In Bathinda, around 1.13 lakh beneficiaries of the state government’s Atta-Daal scheme have been found to be bogus. After a detailed re-verification of beneficiaries, the district authorities have now deleted their names from the record. They are trying to ascertain how such bogus names crept into the list of bonafide beneficiaries. According to information, before the fresh verification was conducted, Food and Civil Supplies Department had 7,69,921 persons registered as beneficiaries of Atta-Daal scheme, and against the total eligible population, the department had issued 2,03,633 cards to the registered families.

Going through the procedure of receiving objections and settling them subsequently, the SDMs have now finalised the lists mentioning 6,56,465 people as actual eligible population for the scheme. Earlier, there was 57.45 per cent of the total population of the district being considered as beneficiary of the Atta-Daal scheme, which has now come down to 48.99 per cent. The state government had ordered verification of all beneficiaries in November last year after irregularities were alleged in the making of blue cards.

According to details available with Daily Post, of 1.24 lakh beneficiaries in Rampura constituency the re-verification team could find only 93,724 to be eligible ones. Of 1.21 lakh enrolled population in Maur assembly constituency, only 93,057 could establish their eligibility. Deputy Commissioner Basant Garg, when contacted, said: “The verification of beneficiaries was must as the Food Security Act clearly says that in case any illegal distribution detected in the scheme, the districts will be held responsible.” “During the process while we deleted the bogus beneficiaries from the list, we also tried to make the maximum eligible beneficiaries’ accounts linked with the Aadhar card so that there is no duplicity in the records,” he added. Sources in Food and Civil Supplies Department said that the state government was this time mulling over to release 10 months’ grains and pulses in one go in June. According to the scheme, each enrolled beneficiary is entitled for 5-kg wheat and 500- gm pulses per month.
