LUDHIANA: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have shot off letters to the Punjab government urging to take immediate steps to stop “illegal bull races” and other uses of animals ahead of the upcoming Kila Raipur rural games to be held from February 4 to 7 in the district.

The organisers of the sports festival, however, claimed that they were not planning to organise any bull race.

The AWBI and PETA have pointed out in their letters that the Supreme Court has banned bull races and bullfights across the country.

On January 12, the SC had stayed the ministry of environment, forest and climate change’s January 7 notification permitting these activities.

The SC in its judgment on May 7, 2014, had banned Jallikattu, a popular bullfight in Tamil Nadu, holding that cruelty is inherent in such sports and that such races violate the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.

Niku Grewal, one of the organisers of Kila Raipur games, said, “We cannot go against the government and the Supreme Court. We will abide by the ruling of the court. We are not planning to organise any bull race.”
