Ludhiana : A clever move by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal foiled the plans of the Youth Congress activists to gherao his house on Sunday. As the Speaker promptly came out of his house to take the memorandum from the protesters, the latter were left with no option but to retreat.

The Youth Congress activists, in a large number, had planned to gherao Atwal’s house, situated in Model Town locality, to corner the state government over the issue of what they called wrong policies of the government. Another issue on their agenda was an alleged fodder scam worth Rs 12,500 crore. A heavy police force had been deployed to prevent any untoward incident but the situation remained normal as Atwal promptly visited the protesters to receive their memorandum and the protest was called off after that.

The protest started at 11 am and ended when Atwal visited the protest and accepted by the memorandum. Sunny Kainth, vice president of Youth Congress said, “A large number of Youth Congress workers staged the protest against the highhandedness by the Punjab government which is causing problems for the people. Several farmers have committed suicide, drug addiction is on the rise, downfall of the industrial sector among other issues.”

On the other hand, Atwal said, “This is not the right way to stage the protest outside the Speaker’s house. I am the Speaker for every political party. I have accepted the memorandum from the Youth Congress leaders and will forward their demands to Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal on Monday.” Meanwhile, on being asked about the allegation leveled by the Youth Congress leaders about the alleged fodder scam, Atwal claimed there was no such scam. At the end, the Youth Congress leaders warned to stage a dharna outside Chief Minister’s house if no action was taken for the issues raised by them.
