LUDHIANA: Punjab education secretary Anjali Bawra has directed all districts in the state not to distribute the Class-8 social studies textbook.

A chapter in the book on efforts of the government in social circles throws light on the schemes of the state government. There are two photographs of CM Parkash Singh Badal distributing bicycles under the Mai Bhago scheme and an illustration of the Nanhi Chhaan project.

There is also a mention of the Central government schemes like the midday meal, but no mention of any union ministers or their photographs.

The textbook has already been distributed in many districts in English, Hindi and Punjabi languages. The book has not been distributed in Ludhiana district, where teachers have been using the old textbook.

A government school principal here said, “We have not received the textbook, but I have come to know that the book has two pictures of the CM. I wonder what message the state government wants to give to students. They are just promoting their schemes by using a school textbook, which is not done.”

Bawra said the distribution of the textbook had been stopped in all districts following complaints.
