Amritsar : Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday warned Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia against trying to criminalise politics in Punjab.

Addressing an impressive public meetings in Nath Di Khui and Turpai villages in Majitha assembly segment, he advised Bikram, who is also a local MLA, not to cross his limits as Punjab was neither West Bengal, as the Akalis were trying to copy the Communist model, nor Haryana and people here will not tolerate criminalisation.

Capt Amarinder said, “I have noticed the anger and resentment prevailing against Bikram Majithia, not just in Amritsar, but in his home constituency Majitha itself.” He acknowledged the presence and participation of people in Congress rallies despite the arm-twisting and intimidating tactics of Bikram. “The signs of revolt against him are already building up”, he said, adding, April 30 will prove to be the beginning of the end for Majithia.

He pointed out, Bikram Majithia was involved and associated with everything that was criminal, starting from arm-twisting and intimidating people, to drug trafficking as he had already been named in the charge-sheet related to drug lord Jagdish Bhola’s case, sand mining, liquor trade, land grabbing, cable grabbing, transport grabbing and so on. He also referred to the killing of an ASI who was shot dead by an Akali activist Rana, a henchman of Majithia, when he tried to resist the harassment to his daughter.

The former Chief Minister promised to ensure that Bikram Majithia was brought to justice even if it mean to going right up to Supreme Court. “Don’t think you are going to be here for always as your countdown has already started”, he told Bikram while adding, “we are living in a democratic country governed by law which has already started catching up with you (Majithia).” Capt Amarinder also cautioned Badals that Bikram Majithia’s ambitions will end at their doors only as he will not be satisfied with anything less.

Addressing the rally here, the senior Congress leader and former deputy speaker of the Punjab Assembly Bir Devinder listed the various achievements of Capt Amarinder during his tenure between 2002 and 2007 and asked the Akalis to list theirs. He pointed out that it was Capt Amarinder who saved the water of Punjab by enacting law, while Badal always exploited people’s sentiments without doing anything.
