CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa, while hailing the formation of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, has expressed the hope that it might be the first step leading towards the end of the stranglehold of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal over the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Bajwa said helplessness of the SGPC could be gauged from the outcome of its executive committee meeting held here on Friday, which took the decision to remove the all-powerful and so-called management expert but kept it pending subject to approval from the deputy CM on whose recommendation this man was appointed. His appointment was rejected by the Gurdwara Judicial Commission but he was re-appointed within a month over more than double the emoluments.

He said what was ironic that the audit firm headed by this person was also working for the Badal family companies. However, this person had failed to bring about any change or make the SGPC more efficient and this had been admitted by SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar. Rather, the so-called effort to corporatise the functioning of the SGPC by Sukhbir had ended in the blatant violation of the ‘maryada’ so far as the construction of the buildings in the Golden Temple complex was concerned, Bajwa said.
