THE GOVT HAS FAILED TO FULFIL PROMISE OF MAKING STATE POWER SURPLUS IN 3 YEARS SUNIL JAKHAR, leader of Opposition

LUDHIANA: As the people of Punjab are grappling with long power cuts, the Congress has decided to take up this issue in the coming Vidhan Sabha session. The industry is feeling the heat with the latest orders of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), as the peak load hour exemption is withdrawn and they can’t work in these peak load hours.

Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sunil Jakhar has decided to take up the issue of severe power crisis in the state in the assembly. Addressing mediapersons here on Sunday, Jakhar said, “There is a need to take steps to improve the power scenario in the state as during the 2007 assembly polls chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had claimed that Punjab would be power surplus in three years. But the government had failed to keep its promise, except for signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) with private players for setting up the plants.”

Maintaining that the situation in the state has worsened with the long power cuts and even the industry is facing problems due to which the production is falling, he said there is a need to find a solution to this problem and if power cuts will continue it will become difficult for the industry to sustain. “We have to adopt a solution-oriented approach and this issue needs to be addressed in the Vidhan Sabha.”

“After the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in May, we have learnt our lessons and are trying to improve our party. People still believe in our party and this will encourage us to address the issues concerning people,” he added.
