Cong stages walkout against property tax

Chandigarh : The main Opposition Congress on Tuesday staged a walkout of the Vidhan Sabha to protest against the continuation of levying property tax in the state.

No sooner Local Government Minister Anil Joshi tabled the Punjab Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2014, the Congress members raised the demand to withdraw the levy in the larger public interest.

Even as Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal assured the House to review the matter and take a decision in the next Cabinet meeting to give relief to the urban populace, around 26 Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar started raising slogans against the government and walked out of the House at 2.39 pm.

“In the past six months, we have noticed some shortcomings in the taxation issues, including property tax, which are taking up in the next Cabinet meeting to take corrective measures,” revealed Sukhbir.
