Abohar : Though Gulzar Singh Ranike, Minister for Welfare of SCs and Backward Classes, had claimed on July 9 that the state government had released a sum of Rs 26.39 crore under the Shagun Scheme for the benefit of 17,594 SC girls, the bank officials concerned say they have yet to receive the funds.

Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Jakhar, today said that after Congress legislators staged a dharna at the Chief Minister’s residence Ranike had announced that directions had been issued to deposit the shagun money in the bank account of the beneficiaries. But a cross-check clearly indicated that the minister had lied. He said that inquiries made from district offices revealed that 27,000 applications were pending in different districts and 1,325 applicants were from the Abohar segment.
