Chandigarh : The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has urged Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to take up the matter of youths detained in the US for illegal immigration and take action against the erring travel agents.
Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director, NAPA, said it was learnt that 33 of 100 detainees were kept at an El Paso detention centre. He said NAPA had found that three detainees were deported to India and others were shifted to different detention centres nearest to the locations of their relatives or family friends.
He alleged the detainees were being subjected to inhuman conditions. Chahal, in a communication to the Chief Minister and the NRI Commission, said NAPA was extending legal assistance to the detainees, but the Punjab Government and the NRI Commission were yet to respond to the plight of the youths. He said though cases of illegal immigration were being exposed, there seemed to be no end to human trafficking from Punjab to the US. He said the Punjab Government must take stringent measures to check the menace.
