Patiala : Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and All India Jat Maha Sabha president Capt Amarinder Singh has blamed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for denying Jats living in Punjab the benefit of reservation.

Referring to the undue delay on part of the Akali government in Punjab to implement the decision that is already in force at the Centre and various other states, Capt Amarinder Singh said that the state missed the chance during the previous UPA government when it failed to make timely recommendation to the National Commission for Backwards for implementing it in Punjab despite his repeated pleas.

He said even the new BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had upheld the UPA government’s decision about Jat reservation. He said that there was no reason for Badal to withhold the implementation in Punjab except for his own vested interest so that the downtrodden and economically weaker sections among the Jats do not get any benefit.

The former Chief Minister asked the government to set a deadline for the implementation of the reservation policy in Punjab so that the youth could get benefits.

He pointed out once the Jat reservation is implemented in Punjab, the youth from the community will be eligible for OBC reservation for civil services, other Central government jobs and related vacancies which come to about one and a half lakh.

Besides, they will also be eligible for admission in various institutions of professional and higher education.

“I am surprised why Badal is not taking the initiative,” he remarked, adding “Either he is not aware of what he is denying the youth of Punjab or he is doing it deliberately to keep them underprivileged so that he can keep on exploiting them politically.”
