Amritsar : The upcoming municipal elections would be a litmus test for the ruling alliance and the Congress ahead of the 2017 Assembly poll in the state, said Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, claiming that people had already decided to vote out the SAD-BJP combine.

Bajwa attended various public meetings organised by former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa at Rayya today to mobilise support for the Congress in the municipal poll. He termed the elections as “semi-finals” before the Assembly elections.

He said the Congress would join hands with the PPP and the Sanjha Morcha. “I would also approach the CPI so that all anti-communal forces are brought on one platform,” he said.

He said the ruling alliance would try to polarise voters on communal grounds. “The Chief Minister has given a veiled threat to people by stating that the SAD-BJP break-up would create communal disharmony in the state,” he alleged.

Even as Bajwa and Capt Amarinder Singh are often at loggerheads, Bajwa praised him stating that during his tenure as Chief Minister, all communities had flourished in the state.

On political situation in case of SAD-BJP break-up, Bajwa said: “Even if both the parties part ways and contest independently, they would make a post-poll alliance saying it is required for peace in Punjab.” He alleged people were fed with the SAD-BJP government.
