CHANDIGARH: The UT police on Tuesday used water cannon to disperse the Congress supporters who tried to cross the barricades at the Sector 25 rally ground while marching towards the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa later alleged that the police had beaten up the Congress supporters, whereas the police denied it, saying some of the party supporters had pelted them with stones, leaving two cops injured. Harinder Singh, a home guard volunteer, and Ram Tej, a Chandigarh Police constable, were given first aid at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16.

For about 15 minutes of water cannon attack, the protesters were brought in a police van to the Sector 17 police station.

Bajwa and Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu led the protest. Later, the Congress supporters arrived at the Sector 17 police station to support their leaders.

ASP (central) Guriqbal Singh said they had registered a case of rioting at the Sector 11 police station against unidentified people.
