CHANDIGARH: Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar has urged the state government to release compensation to farmers who have been hit by rain and hailstorm.

Criticising the government for its “anti-farmer” policies, Jakhar said the Haryana government had doubled the amount of compensation and was also exploring other avenues to help them. However, the Punjab government had not disbursed compensation even when the Union government had released ` 203.22 crore under the disaster management scheme.

The state government received ` 101.61 crore on July 25, 2014, and another ` 101.61 on February 10, 2015. But cashstrapped state government had not passed on the benefit to the affected people who were promised relief in September 2014 following heavy rain, said Jakhar.

The state opposition leader said ` 32.78 crore was yet to be disbursed to the affected families in the Fazilka district. Ridiculing the state government for seeking increased amount of compensation from the Union government, Jakhar said the funds in hand on this account had been misused and attempts were being made to put the Centre in the dock, besides diverting attention of the people. Such political gimmicks would force the people lose faith in the present government, he said.
