AMRITSAR: Six Dalits were injured after they were attacked with firearms and sharp-edged weapons by a group led by a head constable of the Punjab Police at Achintkot village near Attari in the wee hours of Tuesday.

National Commission for Scheduled Castes vice-chairman Raj Kumar Verka meeting one of the Dalits injured in an attack, in Amritsar on Tuesday.

The injured included Malkiat Singh, Satnam Singh, Dhyan Singh, Waryam Singh and Jagjit Singh, who were admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital of the Government Medical College here. The sixth victim, Balbir Kaur, was discharged after first aid. The victims, in their statements to the local police, alleged that the attack was masterminded by head constable Zorawar Singh. He is currently posted as munshi at Khasa police post and is said to be close to an Akali minister.

HEAD CONSTABLE AMONG EIGHT BOOKED
Later, police registered a case at Gharinda police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and the Scheduled Caste/Backward Class (SC/BC) Act. According to the SSP, eight persons named in the FIR had been rounded up. However, the head constable is yet to be taken into custody.

PRESSURE TACTICS
The victims claimed the motive for attacking them was to force them out of their houses built on panchayati as well as shamlat land. In all, 14 families are occupying the land, which they claim was allotted to them in 1973.

They alleged that Zorawar wanted to grab the land after demolishing their houses. They claimed that the village sarpanch, Amrik Singh, himself a Dalit, had been rendered toothless by the cop. The villagers also said that they were Congress supporters and had refused to join the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) despite being threatened on a number of occasions in the past.

The victims alleged that the woman who sustained injuries was pulled out of the washroom where she was taking a bath. Her clothes were taken away and she was beaten up, they claimed.

SC PANEL VICE-CHIEF PULLS UP POLICE
National Commission for Scheduled Castes vice-chairman and Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka has taken a serious note of the attack. Verka reached the hospital after being informed about the incident. He met the injured and summoned Amritsar rural senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jasdeep Singh. He directed the SSP to probe the matter and book the culprits, including the head constable.
