PATIALA: Demanding regularisation of their jobs, teachers under banner of SSA/RMSA/CSS Teachers Union staged protest in front of the deputy commissioner office here on Tuesday.

Teachers working under centrally-sponsored schemes hoding a protest against the Punjab government outside the deputy commissioner’s office in Patiala on Tuesday.

The protesters also burnt an effigy of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for ignoring their demand.

Addressing the gathering, union leader Hardeep Singh Todarpur alleged that the government did not regularise the jobs of the teachers who were recruited under the centrallysponsored schemes, with a view to promoting privatisation in the education sector.

He said that the chief minister had assured to fulfil their demands, but has failed to do the needful in this regard.

“In spite of the provision of regularisation of our jobs after three years in our contracts, the state government has not paid heed to our demand and has ignored it completely”, he said.

More than 13,000 teachers working in different schools across the state have been awaiting regularisation of their jobs for the past five years.

These teachers are also demanding increase in duration of the maternity leave for woman staff.

“At present, woman teachers are permitted to take three months of maternity leave. This is insufficient and poses a threat to their health and that of their newborn,” said Gagan Ranu, a member of the union.

He also added that the government had failed to quash the criminal cases against teachers arrested during a protest in Bathinda last year.
