CHANDIGARH: A joint front of various political parties on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Punjab governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, seeking his intervention to order a probe against Gurdaspur Akali MLA and chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Gurbachan Singh Babbehali for allegedly trying to usurp residential plots with the support of his “henchmen”.
Addressing a press conference here, Congress leader Raman Bahal, who lost to Babbehali in the 2012 assembly polls, alleged that the Akali CPS had been trying to grab about 30 residential plots of Gopal Nagar locality in Gurdaspur with the help of his “henchmen”, namely Bikram Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Sajjan Singh.
Bahal, who was accompanied by representatives of other political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), said they had together been trying to resist the land grab for the past more than four months under the banner of Bhu Mafia Virodhi Morcha.
Bahal said though the Gurdaspur deputy commissioner had conducted a probe in this case and indicted some of the men mentioned, concrete action was not taken against them due to political pressure.
“We submitted a memorandum to the governor, seeking his intervention to order a probe so that unauthorised occupation of residential plots can be prevented and the guilty brought to book,” Congress leader Bahal added.
CPS Babbehali was not available for comment on the issue.
