PATIALA: After being appointed as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president on Friday, Captain Amarinder Singh released documents of HSBC Bank, in which the bank directors stated that neither his wife Preneet Kaur nor son Raninder Singh were account holders.

“We submitted these documents from HSBC Bank to income tax officials in 2011, but whether it is the assembly or Lok Sabha elections or whenever a decision to rejig the state Congress is to be taken, the BJP releases reports of alleged HSBC accounts of my family,” said Amarinder, blaming finance minister Arun Jaitley for the “selective release”. The Captain said Jaitley was indulging in mudslinging as he had failed to digest his defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Amritsar.

Circulating the September 6, 2011, letter signed by HSBC managing director Robert J Du Plessis and director Stephen Barney, Amarinder said the letter had been issued after his counsel wrote to the bank following the publication of the news regarding Preneet and Raninder.

“Following the communication from my counsel, the bank, in its reply, said Preneet and Raninder were neither HSBC Bank account holders nor had the two ever been authorised signatories to any account of the bank,” Amarinder added.

Talking to Hindustan Times, he said the BJP-led NDA government, at the behest of the Akali leadership, was issuing leaks to make news against me.

“Why has Jaitley and his team not released this document which my lawyer submitted with the reply to income tax officials?” he asked, adding that he was open to any inquiry as he was clean on the issue.
