Chandigarh: Punjab Congress legislature party chief Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday strongly condemned the continuing racist discrimination against Sikhs in foreign countries. He has appealed to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee to take note of the recent incidents and take up these matters with the concerned authorities as these things hurt the sentiments of Sikh community. Channi also said that he will soon meet Swaraj in this regard and personally take up the matter with her. He appealed to External Affairs Minister to take up these issues with the governments concerned so that Sikhs do not have to face such humiliation at the international airports in other countries.
He especially referred to the case of Indian-American Sikh actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia who was not allowed to board a flight from Mexico City to New York as he refused to remove his turban for security check. Channi said that such an action on the part of the airport security was highly objectionable as turban is part of the religious symbol for Sikhs, which can’t be removed in public.
