Chandigarh: Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday alleged that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was shedding “crocodile tears” over the death of Harchand Singh Longowal.

“Shedding crocodile tears now is not going to wash your sins,” he told Badal while holding him responsible for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Longowal’s assassination in 1985.

“Badal betrayed him and backed out of the Rajiv-Longowal Accord that eventually led to his assassination,” Capt Amarinder said while rejecting Badal’s allegation during a function that Congress was to be blamed for Longowal’s assassination.

“Either you have lost your conscience or you have lost your memory as otherwise you wouldn’t be blaming others for the crime, you very well know, you are yourself guilty of,” the PCC president told Badal, while asking him, “didn’t you reject the Rajiv-Longowal accord and didn’t you raise the emotions and provoke people that led to Sant’s martyrdom.”

The former chief minister challenged Badal to deny that he did not reject the accord. “Otherwise apologise to Punjabis for betraying Longowal and being responsible for his martyrdom,” he told Badal.

The PCC president said Badal pushed Longowal towards signing the accord and later backed out at the last moment.

“Not only did you back out, you opposed it so vehemently and maliciously and exploited the sentiments of people and provoked them to the extent that Longowal had to pay with his life,” he reminded Badal.
