Jalandhar : Congress on Thursday strongly objected to the distribution of BPL cards by Akali halqa in-charges.

The party also alleged discrimination and discrepancies in the preparation and distribution of the BPL cards claiming that the deserving people were being deliberately left out for political considerations. PPCC vice president and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh staged a demonstration at Kapurthala to protest against the discrimination.

Rana also submitted a memorandum to the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner blaming Akali halqa in-charge, Sarabjit Singh Makkar of interfering in the functioning of the administration and distributing the cards himself. “Though, it was the job of the DFSC but Makkar was deliberately interfering in the administration’s work”, he added.

The Kapurthala MLA alleged that there was discrimination in the distribution of the BPL cards and these were being selectively distributed among the Akali supporters, most of them undeserving. While the Congress supporters despite deserving these cards were being ignored, Akali supporters were being considered, Rana alleged.

Congress vice president disclosed that there were already 15,000 BPL card holders in Kapurthala assembly segment, while 7000 fresh ration cards had been distributed by the Akali halqa in-charge in the recent past.

Meanwhile, following the protest, the DFSC assured the Congress leader that the cards would be distributed from his (DFSC’s) office only. “Currently, there were about 9000 pending BPL cards which would be distributed in a few days by the DFSC”, he add
