NAWANSHAHR: Even after eight months of registering a case against an NRI for deserting his wife, the Nawanshahr police have failed to file a challan in the court.
Now with a hope to get justice, the family of Mandeep Kaur, a resident of Mirpur Jattan, has decided to meet chief minister, deputy chief minister and others at the Punjab NRI Sammelan on January 11 in the city.
65-year-old farmer Sarbjit Singh, father of Mandeep Kaur, speaking to Hindustan Times, said that his daughter was married to Satwinder Singh of Punnu Mazara village on May 10, 2009 and had lavishly spent on the marriage.
He further alleged that the in-laws demanded ` 11 lakh from him for taking Satwinder to New Zealand and he gave the amount to Singh, who flew to New Zealand in February 2011 promising that he would also call Kaur after reaching there.
He alleged that his daughter spent two years in a miserable condition at her in-laws’ place in New Zealand .
He said that then his daughter sent an e-mail to the Nawanshahr police after which an FIR was registered against Satwinder, his parents Chain Singh, Surjit Kaur and another Bhupinder Singh under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) on May 30, 2013.
When contacted, SHO of the NRI police station Daljit Singh said, “Satwinder had communicated that he would come and join the investigation but he did not come back due to which, proceedings for declaring him proclaimed offender got delayed.”
