New Delhi : Senior Congress leader and former MLA from Batala Gopal Krishan Chatrath was today appointed chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee's (PPCC) disciplinary panel which will have four more members.

Chatrath, former Advocate-General of Punjab, was chosen head after consultations with all factions of the state Congress, party sources said. Also on the committee is Gurkanwal Kaur, daughter of assassinated CM Beant Singh. A former minister, she was not been included in the reconstituted PPCC. Her nephew Ravneet Bittu, Lok Sabha MP from Anandpur Sahib, is a permanent invitee.

Gurkanwal Kaur had objected to rebels from the Akali Dal, CPI and the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) finding place on the new PPCC list. She had termed it as an "all-party list rather than a Punjab Congress list".

She had also complained against the "poor" representation of women in the PPCC, pointing out that of the 111 office-bearers, only nine were women whereas the Congress had been promising 33 per cent reservation to women. The other three members on the committee are former Deputy Speaker Jaswant Singh, former MLA Bhag Singh and former state youth Congress president Rana Varinder Singh.
