Honour for Punjabi scientist in US

Chandigarh : Dr Shiv Inder Singh Grewal, a scientist from Ludhiana, now settled in the US, has been elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. His election is a matter of pride as Nobel prize winners and other eminent scientists from across the globe are elected and associate members of the academy.
Earlier this week, Dr Grewal was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Having distinguished scholars as its members, the academy's mandate is to provide independent, objective advice to the nation on science and technology.
Dr Grewal, did M.Sc from PAU, Ludhiana, in 1989. Director, Research, PAU, Dr SS Gosal said Dr Grewal was a dedicated student and had gone to the UK on a scholarship to do doctorate. "We are glad to know that he has been elected member of the two most prestigious academies of the US," he said.
In a statement, Dr Grewal's family said: Dr Grewal has done a groundbreaking research in the field of epigenetics. His studies have provided critical insights into how cells control structure of the chromosomes. This 'epigenetic' (literally, beyond the gene) regulation is fundamentally important to human development".
