Jalandhar : A Punjabi NRI youth hailing from Jalandhar was shot dead in the Cebu city of Philippines while he was away for work on Tuesday. There have been a spate of killings of Punjabis in Philippines over the past some time. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Singh alias Goru (30), a resident of Seechewal village under Shahkot sub-division of Jalandhar. Ranjit, who was residing in the Cebu city for the past over eight years was married to a Philippine woman and had two children.
In Seechewal, Amrik Singh, the elder brother of the deceased Ranjit Singh said that they have received a phone call from Cebu that his brother was shot dead and rushed to hospital. Amrik informed that he too was settled in Philippine, but returned back to India after he failed to get a permanent visa.
The family expressed doubt over a gang from Jagraon in Ludhiana, which was notorious for abducting Punjabis in Philippine behind this incident. He said, “The gang from Jagroan was notorious for committing such crime of abduction and seeking hefty amount for releasing the Punjabis.”
Earlier last year, Ranjit was arrested by the Philippine police for short of necessary visa documents. He was released on bail in February this year. “His close friends in Philippine assisted him monetarily to settle down”, his brother added.
It is pertinent to mention here that a gang of Punjabis was active in Philippine, which was in news for kidnapping Punjabis and seeking ransom for releasing them. The gang from Jagraon had been keeping a check on the economical status of vulnerable youth back home in Punjab and kidnapping them. “It was a vicious nexus and many Punjabis have also been killed in the recent past”, the family stated.
