Punjabi woman to contest Oz Assembly poll

Chandigarh : The Liberal Party of Australia (Victoria Division) has nominated a woman of Punjabi origin for the first time to represent the Bundoora seat in the state assembly elections scheduled to be held on November 29.
Amita Gill had resided in Chandigarh before migrating to Australia in 2005. She is now based in Melbourne. Her husband hails from Rania village in Moga district.
Her late father was a Brigadier in the Indian Army and was the first recipient of the sword of honour from the batch that passed out from the IMA immediately after Independence.
Amita worked in the education sector in Australia and was running a private organisation, the Victorian Institute of Culinary Arts and Technology with mainly overseas students. She was a member of the Liberal Party and a host of multi-cultural organisations in Melbourne. She has been actively participating in party debates on various issues. The Bundoora constituency in Victoria is situated on the northern side of Melbourne. It has a multicultural character as its population comes from diverse ethnic backgrounds and a large number of Punjabis are settled in this constituency which is now represented by the main opposition, the Labour Party.
