LONDON: Faced with several cases of visa fraud, Britain has restricted the ability of students from India and other non-EU countries to switch to an ‘entrepreneur visa’ after their courses are over and instead of setting up a business, end up as low-skilled workers.
Immigration minister James Brokenshire said in a statement to parliament that the entrepreneur visa route was intended to allow migrants to set up companies in Britain to create jobs and growth.
“However, evidence show people on expiring student visas are transferring to entrepreneur status under the pretence of setting up a business when they are actually working in low skilled jobs”, he said. The curbs come into force from Friday. In addition, those who have not yet started businesses and who do not have evidence of a genuine business will not be able to transfer to entrepreneur visa, he added.
