NRI Sabha urged to create awareness about safe migration abroad

Jalandhar: Urging the NRI Sabha Punjab to create awareness and educate people about safe migration abroad, the Consulate General of Canada on Tuesday said that major concerns of NRIs would be taken up with the Canadian High Commissioner.
The Consulate General of Canada, Chandigarh also informed the NRI Sabha delegation that Punjabi diaspora facing civil problems should approach the lawyers in Canada for legal assistance.
Counselor (Administration) and Consul P Coolen was in Jalandhar on Tuesday for promoting the registration of Canadians with the Consulate General of Canada, Chandigarh. They would also hold a seminar in this regard later.
During the meeting, NRI Sabha president Jasvir Singh Gill took up the matrimonial problems faced by the Punjabis in Canada due to fraud marriages besides taking up the crucial issue of Indian women deserted by their husbands.
Gill highlighted while they keep on getting such complaints of fraud marriages by the NRIs but according to the official records, there were as many as 1,100 such cases of matrimonial problems pertaining to different countries, which were lying unsolved.
The NRI Sabha president maintained that the Punjabi women being deserted by NRI husbands was a major socio-economic problem faced by their families back home. Coolen said, “We have received your agenda and it would be taken up with the Canadian High Commissioner.”
Coolen also maintained that people back in Punjab should engage legal assistance through Canadian Bar Association.
