Murder case lodged in 2011 NRI death case

NURMAHAL: The Nurmahal police have booked unidentified persons on charges of murdering a UK-based non-resident Indian (NRI) in 2011.

Sodhi Singh (40), a native of Uppal Khalsa village, died on his way to a Ludhiana Hospital on April 22, 2011.

The Nurmahal police had registered a case under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) the next day on the statement from Gurdev Kaur, the mother of Sodhi Singh.

Station house officer Gulshan Kumar said a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered in this connection.

The case has been registered on the basis of an inquiry report conducted by inspector general of police (crime) as ordered by the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Justice Kuldeep Singh while hearing a petition filed by the deceased’s wife Kanwaljit Kaur ordered on December 1 to register a case as recommended by inspector general of police (crime) in his inquiry report.

The court in its order said the recommendation is dated November 28 and a first information report (FIR) has not been registered so far. The court directed the state council to inform it on December 19, the next date of hearing, whether an FIR has been registered or not.

Director bureau of investigation, Punjab, in an official communication to Jalandhar (rural) SSP directed him to register the FIR immediately.

The inspector general of police (crime) concluded in his report that Sodhi Singh died after consuming/sniffing some narcotic drug/ psychotropic substance.

The source of these drugs need to be ascertained, the inspector general of police further observed in his report.
