LUDHIANA: Using distraction as a trick, two men on Tuesday stole cash and jewellery from an NRI (non-resident Indian) woman near Old Sabzi Mandi here.
Victim Manmohan Kaur Bedi of the UK had come to India with family to attend a wedding. She was in the driver’s seat of a car outside Punjab and Sind Bank, while her husband, Raj Bedi, was inside the branch for some business. A man knocked at the car window and asked her to pick up a ` 10 note from under the vehicle.
She didn’t pay him any attention but after few minutes when another man came over and told her the same, she took the bait. As she stepped out to pick up the note, the conmen grabbed her purse off the car seat. It contained ` 35,000 cash and jewellery worth ` 7.5 lakh.
Police from the Division Number 1 responded to her call, after which station house officer (SHO) concerned inspector Dharampal confirmed that a case had been lodged.
