VANCOUVER: A shooting death early on Sunday in Surrey has been linked to the recent spree of shootings in the community, police said.

The victim was identified as Arun Paul Singh Bains, 22, who was known to be associated with the people linked to the streetlevel drug trade conflict.

Sources told The Province newspaper that Arun was the nephew of Harry Bains, Punjabi-origin MLA of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from Surrey-Newton. There have been 23 shootings in Surrey and Delta in the past 38 days, with a number of them linked to the conflict. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is looking for the help of anyone who might have been in the area where Arun was found around 3am.

“This murder is a tragic incident; one that we feared would happen in the light of the recent string of shootings,” said Surrey RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) spokesman Sgt Dale Carr in a news release.

“Our deep concern now is that there may be a retaliation incident. We are appealing to those involved in this ongoing dispute to not take any more lives and to understand that this is more than gunplay, it’s murder. We have a significant number of resources investigating the recent shootings,” said Carr. “The Surrey RCMP has partnered with other police agencies, including the Delta police, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and now the IHIT to find a resolve. Now more than ever, we need assistance from the community. We need you to come forward with any little bit of information you may have before another young person is killed,” he added.

The area around the most recent crime scene had to be closed temporarily for the probe, said the IHIT’s Sgt Stephanie Ashton. “Police were called just after 3am, when residents heard what they thought were gunshots,” said Ashton. “They found a man, who was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.”

A car that crashed into a pole at the scene is believed to be related to the murder.
