LUDHIANA: Angela Christian (47), a British woman who had come to Ludhiana to meet one of her Facebook friends, fell ill suddenly and died at SPS Apollo Hospital here on Sunday.

Medical report suggests that she had acute pneumonia, which caused the fatal respiratory arrest. The police have moved her body to the hospital’s mortuary and informed her family as well as the United Kingdom embassy.

“Angela, a divorcee, and Jaspal Singh of Ludhiana’s Daba area had become friends on social networking website Facebook a few months ago,” said Ludhiana police commissioner Pramod Ban, adding: “Jaspal Singh (30) is a bachelor and a private firm employee.”

The British woman had arrived in Ludhiana on May 4 and stayed with Jaspal Singh. Illness forced her to be moved to Deep Hospital, Model Town, where doctors referred her to SPS Apollo Hospital on May 16. Jaspal Singh has told the police that Angela was a happy individual keen to visit all the historical places of Punjab, and his family had welcomed her and taken good care of her.

“We tried to provide her with the best of treatment for her illness,” he said. “Since a visiting foreigner has died, we have to investigate the matter thoroughly. So far, we have no reason for any doubt. The woman caught pneumonia after landing in India and Jaspal took her to hospital, where her condition got worse, is all we know, so far,” said the police commissioner.

The police are waiting for her family to arrive from the United Kingdom.
