JALANDHAR: The investigations into the murder of UK-based Punjab-born hotelier Ranjit Singh Power have revealed that main accused Baldev Singh Deol had tried to mislead the police by not carrying his mobile phone at the time of the crime.

Cops investigating the case said that on May 8, when the hotelier was murdered by Deol and his nephew Sukhdev Singh in Anandpur Sahib, Deol had left his mobile phone with his driver at Shahkot to give police the slip so that during later investigation, his tower location would be Shahkot and not Anandpur Sahib.

However, the police ruled out the role of the driver in the crime and picked up Sukhdev who confessed to the crime.

Deol went back to the UK on May 15. Later, Power’s younger brother Amrik Singh reached here and a kidnapping case was registered against Deol. The police said that before going back to the UK, Deol also opened a bank account for Sukhdev in order to send him money.

They said the hotelier’s business partner had disappeared from the UK after the British media reported the murder.

The mysterious silence of the hotelier’s family even after the body has been recovered also raised brows as there are reports that the family is yet to decide about visiting the city.

The family friends said they had talked to the family in the UK, who were yet to decide about the cremation or visiting the city.

He said the body had been kept at the mortuary of the civil hospital after the post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Rajinder Singh said, “We have nothing to do with the family as the body was recovered and handed over to the hotelier’s friend.” The DCP said the police would write to the authorities soon for starting the extradition process for the main accused.
