WASHINGTON: An Indian-origin woman has emerged as a key witness in the trial of James Holmes who is accused of killing 12 people watching a movie in a theatre in Aurora, Colorado in 2012.
Gargi Datta, who is a student at the University of Colorado’s, was Holmes’s girlfriend, and their break-up, prosecutors are saying, was a catalyst to the killings five months later.
Testifying at Holmes’s trial, Datta, 25, said Wednesday she ended the relationship in February as she didn’t see much future in it. And the killings took place in July.
Holmes had opened fire using multiple weapons on people watching a late night show of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 and injuring 70. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to 166 counts brought against him.
Datta continues to study at the university where she had met Holmes, a fellow undergrad in 2011.
When asked how was Holmes at school, Datta said, “He was pretty shy and closed off. But in their smaller group of friends “he wasn’t extremely interactive”. She said, “I was getting distant from him. I had already told him from the start it would be a casual relationship. I didn’t really feel close to him.”
