LONDON: Queen Elizabeth mocked former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher’s distinct accent, and joked about her behind her back during the 1980s, a new book on the relationship between the two powerful women has claimed.
According to Dean Palmer, author of the book ‘The Queen and Mrs Thatcher: An Inconvenient Relationship’, the head of state also referred to Thatcher as ‘that woman’ to Commonwealth leaders.
“Elizabeth found the means to snub and undermine her prime minister through petty class putdowns and a series of press leaks. Margaret attacked her monarch by sidelining her internationally, upstaging her at home and allowing the Murdoch press to crucify the royal family”, a description of the book says. Palmer told The Express that the two female figureheads “met and disliked each other on sight”.
